Lotteries are known to create dozens of winners all over the world every week and the same is also applicable to games in Canada. Winning the lottery can undoubtedly change your life and it is definitely fun when you are playing for the first time. If you go over lottery winner stories, some of them are downright scary. As a matter of fact, these stories have prompted people to believe that the lottery is cursed because even though they win millions, the winners end up in worse conditions than they were before they won.
However, winning the lottery doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing and there have been some good stories of lottery winners as well. The key difference between two is that some winners are smart and patient and don’t let emotions take control when it comes to managing their winnings.
Taking home a lottery prize can change everything and pave the way for a better and bright future and this is exactly what happened in the case of a Canadian teen. Hailing from the province of Quebec, Charlie Lagarde managed to strike the jackpot after she purchased her first lottery ticket in order to mark her 18th birthday.
Charlie turned 18 on 14 March and decided to celebrate this milestone by buying a bottle of champagne as well as a scratch ticket. After all, you have to be at least 18 years of age in order to participate in lottery games and she was well aware of it. It is quite tough to win the lottery, no matter what game you play, so it was definitely a surprise for her when she won the big prize. When it came to claiming her prize, she had two options at her disposal; she could either take home a lump sum prize, which would be C$1 million or she could choose to get $1,000 every week for her entire life.
The young winner turned out to be smarter than most lottery winners because she chose not to impulsive, a mistake common amongst lottery winners. She consulted a financial adviser and chose to go with the $1,000 annuity because it didn’t involve any taxes. A spokesman for the Lottery Corporation, Patrice Lavoie said that this was a good move on her part. A $1,000 a week is the equivalent of an annual salary of more than $100,000 each year. This is an excellent start for the young girl.
It was Charlie’s first lottery ticket ever and it is undeniably great for her to have won in her first try. According to her, she plans on using her winnings for furthering her education and for traveling purposes. She said that she wanted to study photography and it was her dream to eventually work for the National Geographic. Therefore, she was going to use her winnings for fulfilling her dream. While Charlie’s win was certainly a stroke of luck, there was another lucky winner who actually won twice in the duration of a few months.
A Canadian immigrant has now become a millionaire because he won the lottery two twice in just a short span of two months. Now, who wouldn’t want that kind of luck? 28 year old Manitoba Melhig won a total prize of C$3.5 million through two separate purchases of lottery tickets. Mr. Melhig originally belonged to Africa, but had moved to Winnipeg. It was not specified as to which part of Africa he belongs to. He is now residing in Canada and he stated that he was going to use his winnings to go back to school.
Speaking to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Mr. Melhig said that he was young and he had to think about how he was going to grow. The lottery had provided his an excellent opportunity. The first time that he was able to win a prize was in April when he took home a prize of $1.5 million. The young winner had used that sum for moving his family from a flat to a house. He said that everything was new to his young family and they were now able to enjoy a nice yard and could go to good schools. The entire family was simply loving this experience.
After winning such a big prize, Mr. Melhig didn’t expect to win the lottery again and that too in such a short time period. Nonetheless, it seems that lightning did strike twice because the one-time winner became a two-time winner in August. He had purchased a C$20 Scratch-and-Win ticket and this awarded him a substantial jackpot prize of C$2 million. Since he already used his previous winnings to give a better life to his family, Mr. Melhig said that he was going to use this prize for opening his own business.
He said that he would probably use the sum for opening a car wash or a petrol station first and then was going to use what was left over to finally go to school. He repeatedly expressed his desire to go to school. He added that his goal was to improve his English as much as possible as that would improve his communication. He stated that he wanted to learn something useful as well like a carpentry skill or something that could be good for him in the future.
These two winners were extremely lucky because they were able to win prizes without putting in a ton of effort or money. Other than that, what set them apart from the rest of the lottery winners is that they were very wise about how to use their winnings. Instead of blowing them away on meaningless things, the winners used their prizes in such a way that their future would be secure and they would be able to enjoy their life in the best possible way.
The 18-year-old winner opted for the annuity option while many others would have gone for the lump sum. The 28-year-old chose to use his winnings to invest on education that could help him in the future.
